Thrombosis: tangled up in NETs.

The contributions by blood cells to pathological venous thrombosis were only recently appreciated. Both platelets and neutrophils are now recognized as crucial for thrombus initiation and progression. Here we review the most recent findings regarding the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in thrombosis. We describe the biological process of NET formation (NETosis) and how the extrace...

Tangled (up in) cubes.

The 'simplest' entanglements of the graph of edges of the cube are enumerated, forming two-cell {6, 3} (hexagonal mesh) complexes on the genus-one two-dimensional torus. Five chiral pairs of knotted graphs are found. The examples contain non-trivial knotted and/or linked subgraphs [(2, 2), (2, 4) torus links and (3, 2), (4, 3) torus knots].

From untangled graphs and nets to tangled materials

We suggest constructive definitions for the determination of untangled finite graphs and three-periodic nets, using barycentric embeddings in two and three dimensions. The possibility of deliberately constructing tangled graphs and nets is canvassed, and we conclude that tangled patterns offer a novel class of nanoand meso-structured materials with useful features, including high internal surfa...

Tangled

A 4-year-old girl presented with 1-year history of fatigue, early satiety, intermittent vomiting, alopecia, pallor, and weight loss without changes in bowel habits or overt gastrointestinal bleeding. Examination revealed thin hair, pale conjunctivae, and mu-cous membranes. Tachycardia and a systolic flow murmur (grade II/VI) were present. Abdomen was nontender, distended, and tympanitic, with h...
